A brisk walk of about 2¾ miles that includes fine views, a stretch along the canal, and some uphill walking on the return.
From Fiveways set off up the High Street to Park Lane past the Eykyn Arms car park. Continuing to the end of the lane, ignoring the first footpath sign to the right, turn right at the second footpath signpost on to a wide track between two hedgerows. From this track, known locally as the Ridge, are extensive panoramic views all round. The hedgerow on the left ends after about 200 yards and you continue along the track keeping close to the hedgerow on the right. Where this hedge ends (or rather takes a right-angled turn) keep on across the field ahead bearing slightly to the left taking a well-trodden but not signposted path sloping downhill to the trees and hedgerow about 300 yards away. Going through the wide gap in the hedge, where there is a finger post, turn left going down along the side of the uncultivated field until you reach the wide gap at the road.
Turning right at the road you soon go over the level-crossing and the canal bridge. Gaining access to the canal towpath from the left side of the road, turn left (east, Blisworth direction) along the towpath. After ½ mile you pass under a road bridge (Wrights Lane) and continue for another ½ mile to the next bridge (footbridge) where you leave the towpath and walk over the bridge (footpath unmarked).
After 150 yards you cross the railway bridge going through the gate (or over the stile) and then climb gently uphill for 300 yards bearing slightly to the right over the grassy field, aiming for the stile at the gap in the hedge. Over the stile and continuing uphill for ¼ mile and bearing slightly right, you arrive at the last stile about 50 yards from the gate opening on to Wrights Lane.
Turning left towards Milton Road and then right along Baker Street you reach the starting point at Fiveways. The stretch from the canal to Wrights Lane is across uncultivated land with grazing sheep and it too offers good views as one climbs up and looks back to the canal.
